The Poker Test - Part 5

As I mentioned in Part Four, I had discontinued The Poker Test due to an inordinate amount of faulty gimmicks. During this time I had quit working at Daytona Magic to start taking classes at the local college and began working at a law firm.

The Poker Test - Part 4

The Poker Test was selling like crazy and the reviews were wildly positive. It was something that I truly did not anticipate, especially since I had been overwhelmed with anxiety since it had been released. I was filled with doubts and thoughts kept running through my head. What would people think? Would they like my trick? Was I boring on the DVD? Did I teach enough? And the list goes on and on. Those questions plagued my mind night after night but then that all started to stop as the reviews came in. Everyone loved it and loved the gimmick. So much so that it completely sold out way faster than I anticipated and Penguin Magic wanted another 1000 as soon as possible. It took me months to make 1000 units and I didn’t want to lose any future sales, so I had to take action!

Production of the gimmicks was moving along slowly. I knew I needed a thousand, but even making a hundred took a lot of time. Luckily I have a great group of friends who helped by packaging the product and keeping me company so I didn’t get too bored in my garage. I followed a strict routine; I set up my two box fans in the garage, I’d grab a jug of water, take as many decks outside as I could, and then get to gaffing! The two fans were used to keep the air circulating so I could withstand the Florida heat; one would be blowing air in and the other would blow air out. When my friends came I could make up to 20 gimmicks. One of them would pack all the gimmicks into a sandwich bag and freeze them while the other would take them after they had frozen and thaw the gimmick and package it into their proper envelopes. I would freeze the cards because they would warp from the humidity and the freezing of the cards reverted them back to their unwarped state. You have to remember to let them thaw entirely before you take them out of the bag, or condensation will warp the cards worse than the humidity.

At the end of 2011, I had a run-in with Johnny Ace Palmer (look this guy up, he’s amazing) and I got to show him my trick. He loved it and asked me to teach it to him, so I ended the year very well. I wish I could say 2012 started out just as well but unfortunately, it did not.

The Poker Test - Part 1

When I was just wrapping up high school, like many others my age, I was not 100% sure what I wanted my next steps to be. I knew I wanted to work in one of those fields. I had no interest in pursuing college even though every adult I knew was pressuring me to go, I knew it was not for me and I had no desire to pursue higher education. Magic seemed more fun to me, so naturally, I chose to pursue magic. I already had a job in town working at Chic-Fil-A and I picked up another job at a magic shop an hour away. While working at the magic shop I was forced to demo magic every day for hours. It was a brutal experience, but a great one. I can only do the change bag so many times before I start to lose my mind.
